Because of this, according to Stearns, setup takes just a matter of minutes, requiring only power, Ethernet, and HDMI cables to connect to the display (s). The Neat Bar performs all its computing on-device and contains an integrated microphone array, speakers and camera system. Using a Neat Bar with a single camera system, Zoom Smart Gallery can send multiple individual video feeds from the same room, in effect replicating the gallery view of a fully remote Zoom meeting. Still, for those dialing into the conference room video feed, it can be challenging to pick out individual facial expressions and other nuances of communication. Remote attendees, with their dedicated video stream, are displayed prominently. Since many businesses are returning to the office in varying capacities, meetings will often feature both in-person and remote attendees. When many businesses were working 100% remotely, gallery view (known by different names depending on platform) allowed everyone to see each other equally, regardless of location and who had the floor. Last on his part of the tour, Stearns took us into a medium-sized conference room to demonstrate Zoom’s Smart Gallery experience. He pointed out that this capability could also come in handy in places like New York City, where street noise often bleeds into nearby office buildings. Stearns demonstrated how new technology from Poly and Neat could sonically cordon the areas off from each other using acoustic “fencing” technology. Within the space were several couches, comfy chairs and a few workstations off to the side. This trend was emerging even before the pandemic. The camera followed Stearns into a large, open space to show how its technology partners are adapting to the demand for more informal collaboration spaces. Stearns also demonstrated how users could join meetings on this device via voice command and explained that Zoom had integrated Zoom Phone into all its Zoom Room devices, eliminating the need for additional dongles, cables, adapters, etc. Instead of the Zoom Room Controller on the table in the larger conference room, this room featured an all-in-one interactive whiteboard, the DTEN D7, which includes a built-in microphone, speakers and a camera capacitive touchscreen (available in 55” or 75” editions). Next, Stearns entered another smaller room, or “huddle space” meant to accommodate 4-5 meeting participants. Stearns demonstrated how to pair and identically replicate the Room Controller experience on a personal device for anyone who may be uncomfortable using a touch screen in a common area during a global pandemic, flu season, etc. Pairing a personal device with the Zoom Room Controller. While light on breaking news, the engaging briefing offered a helpful glimpse into Zoom’s vision of the future of hybrid work. ![]() ![]() I recently got the chance to partake in a virtual walkthrough of the second floor of one of Zoom’s buildings in San Jose, showcasing the last six to eight months of the company’s newest solutions and capabilities. Furthermore, it’s grown its capabilities significantly through its organic innovations. Despite some initial privacy stumbles, I’ve been impressed at how quickly it managed to right the ship, scale up its capacity and remain, relatively unchallenged, as perhaps the most popular platform of its kind throughout the Covid pandemic. The company admittedly was not ready for prime time when it rocketed from its relatively unknown status to a household name practically overnight. The video collaboration platform has become nothing short of ubiquitous over the last two years, as much of the world has come to rely on it for work, school, social life, doctor’s appointments, and everything in between. These days Zoom requires no introduction. I could also remember the flaw in my reasoning the first time. Since I was using Anki, I knew the answer without reading the question. I repeated incorrect questions twice (once by accident, and once by curiosity). (To read The Secret to Scoring 250/260+ You Can Learn Right Now: Question Interpretation, click here). By constantly applying knowledge to novel clinical scenarios, I vastly improved my Step 1 score. Rather I got really good at applying pathophysiologic principles to questions I had never seen before. Remember: I didn’t score 270 on Step 1 by having more knowledge than 99.9% of other medical students. A 250+ Comes From Applying Pathophysiologic Principles to Questions You’ve Never Seen Before (This might even be a waste of UWorld questions see above). However, this definitely does NOT have to be UWorld. Introducing a QBank into your studies early in your second year or even late in your first year is useful. Furthermore, you must know how to apply it to clinical scenarios. (To read Beyond UFAP: Why a List of Resources Isn’t a Good Step 1 Strategy, click here).ĭoing well on the USMLEs (and Step 1 in particular) involves having as much integrated, applied knowledge of the human body as possible. Thus, to score high, drink from their never-ending fount of knowledge as early and as much as. This is a variant of the UFAP refrain: “all you need is UWorld and First Aid.” In this school of thought, the only things Step 1 will test you on are found in these two resources. Claim #2: Begin UWorld at Least a Year Before Your Exam I didn’t repeat either, and didn’t even go through my incorrect questions. My NBMEs were in the 250s before I even started UWorld. Use UWorld (or other QBanks) to simulate never-before-seen questions.įull disclosure: I used Kaplan’s Question Bank first. But if UWorld is so much like the USMLE, why are so many students blind-sided? Because they go in thinking the content of the test will be identical to UWorld. How many students claim their test was nothing like First Aid/UWorld? Lots. However, that does NOT mean that your USMLE will be exactly like every UWorld question. So why do so few people do it? UWorld is similar to USMLEs. How can you get questions right you’ve never seen before? By practicing questions that you haven’t seen before. How to Prepare for Questions You’ve Never Seen Before Getting never-seen-before questions right differentiates people who are scoring <240 vs. This is my real secret to scoring 270 on Step 1. Learn how to reason through questions that you’ve never seen before. Some you may have never even thought about. Because they’re so close to the real thing, I did NOT do UWorld twice.Ī huge challenge for USMLE Step 1 is questions that you have never seen before. UWorld questions are as close to the real thing as possible. If something has helped in the past, then repeating it ad infinitum will increase your score indefinitely. This is one of the most common misconceptions I see among students preparing for Step 1. If a little of something is good, then more must be better, right? Therefore, doing it more than once will somehow boost your score even further. Why does everyone tell you to repeat UWorld? It’s simple: UWorld is a fantastic resource (it really is). This is perhaps the most common advice I heard as a medical student. If you can brave forums without getting palpitations, share it in the comments and I will update this article. However, med student forums still give me pangs of anxiety, with all of their distress and breathless dogma. NOTE: I considered sifting through any of the number of anonymous USMLE forums to find examples of this advice. It also comes from well as having tutored students for the USMLE Step and Shelf exams. The “common knowledge” surrounding UWorld is an opinion. This is also my opinion from preparing for Step 1/Step 2 CK. Here I deconstruct several of the most common beliefs surrounding the UWorld Question Bank.
It’s not horribly observed, but not too many self-serious roadies don Camelbaks for fear of ridicule and shame. When backing away from the resting heart rate super fast guy, Chalmers accidentally knocks over and breaks a bunch of head units charging. This is probably the best joke of the sequence. Image: The Simpsons / Fox Hit #4: “They hadn’t synced yet!” Good line reading from Dan Castellaneta (I think?), and them hucking the bikes on the roof and scuttling into the back of the van while suckling on gels is a fun bit of animation. The watch is a bit of a miss, though-who rides with a head unit AND watch? This guy clearly shreds, so Chalmers is right to be frightened. I mean, a 30 BPM resting HR is pretty impressive. Not bad!
